Only one tablet has survived the rise and fall of the tablet craze — mostly unscathed, that is— and that’s the Apple iPad. First launched in 2010, the original iPad mostly served as a larger iPhone, but without calling capabilities. And with no front-facing camera, you couldn’t even place video calls. Fast forward almost a decade and Apple’s tablet lineup are bonafide laptop replacements for some. Apple has adapted the iPad in form, function, and overall cost in such a way that it’s become the no-brainer tablet purchase.

Apple isn’t placing new restrictions on AI features in apps, at least not yet.

On Thursday, the developer of BlueMail — who has squared off with Apple over its App Store policies before — said the company held up an update adding ChatGPT-powered email generation and other features.

A reviewer said his app needed to add content moderation or else restrict access to ages 17 and up, but then later, the same update was approved, unchanged. The App Store doesn’t have policies about AI specifically, so we can only wait and see if it tightens restrictions further,

An Apple patent (PDF) awarded on Valentine’s Day hints at future iPhones with touch-sensitive volume sliders and folding screens.

There’s also a “virtual shutter button” that sounds a lot like the solid-state buttons predicted by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo last year.

Whether Apple actually makes a foldable iPhone (we’ve seen patent applications before) or is playing the wait-and-see game is still up in the air, but Kuo had also predicted a foldable iPad for 2024.

DaVinci Resolve is finally available on the iPad.

Blackmagic Design first announced DaVinci Resolve for ‌iPad‌ back in October, and now its popular video editing app is available to download for free on the App Store. You can also unlock the full premium version of DaVinci Resolve via an in-app purchase of $94.99

The app is best optimized for iPad Pro models running M-series chips and offers similar tools to its desktop counterpart.

There’s still very little reason to upgrade a 2018 iPad Pro.

The 2018 iPad Pro came out over four years ago, but it remains an impressively capable tablet. Apple has released three updates since then and added some minor features that may matter to your specific workflow (or not).

But the iPad Pro from four years ago is still so good that digital illustrator Brad Colbow still uses his for multiple hours every day, despite reviewing lots of other newer devices for his YouTube channel.

Is that a testament to how great the 2018 model is or a knock against how little Apple has moved the iPad forward since then? You decide.

Who is Apple’s Next Top Design Star?

Over at Bloomberg, Mark Gurman has summed up the state of Apple’s product design department now that the current lead hardware design, Evans Hankey, has said she plans to leave in a few months.

Her departure comes just three years after Jony Ive’s exit, and it’s unclear who will step into the gap of managing the look and feel for iPhones, Macs, and everything else.

After Ive’s departure, both groups were placed under the purview of Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.

Over the past few years, the team has lost the majority of senior designers who worked under Ive, with many of them going to his new firm, LoveFrom. That has now made it harder to replace Hankey, people with knowledge of the matter said. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.
