<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">You wouldn’t know that the Apple Watch Series 12 is a big deal just by looking at it. It has the same design, buttons, sizes, and sensor types as generations of Apple Watches before it. But under the hood, the Series 12 builds in major changes that lay the groundwork for big ideas about the future of health and wearables.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These ideas —&nbsp;and this year’s updates — can be divided into two parts: catching up to the recent boom in AI health and leading the way in AI wearables that surface helpful information based on your entire day. When it comes to the former, Apple is catching up to the rest of the wearable space, which has eagerly embraced AI as a way to make sense of all your health data. With the latter, Apple is potentially kicking the door down on what’s been a niche, nascent, and recently problematic market. (Either way you slice it, AI is part of the equation.) Most of the ideas explored with the Series 12 aren’t novel, but they haven’t been implemented by a company with Apple’s scale or reputation.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After a week with the Series 12, I can’t say I have a complete picture. Several of the most interesting health and AI features aren’t launching until later this year and weren’t available for review. But even without them, the revamped internals provide some meaningful upgrades. So for now, this is a look at the health features that’ll be available at launch — and a preview of the wild AI ideas to come.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">New hardware</h1>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">Two key hardware updates separate the Series 12 (and the Ultra 4) from previous Apple Watches. The first is the new S11 chip, which features a secure exclave for microphone data processing on top of a faster CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. There’s also a completely redesigned health sensor array. This new array doesn’t necessarily capture <em>new</em> data, but it enables the watch to measure health metrics in a more frequent, accurate, and power-efficient way. The electrodes that enable the EKG feature are larger to ensure better skin contact, the photodiodes have been reconfigured to capture reflected light more efficiently, and larger, less power-hungry optical LEDs are in place to shine light into the skin.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Together, these hardware upgrades enable a host of new software features, including more frequent heart rate sampling, a new readiness score, and a brave new world of Audio Intelligence, which is what Apple is calling its upcoming suite of AI-powered ambient listening features.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most notably, the redesigned sensors mean the Series 12 and Ultra 4 are now capable of truly continuous heart rate monitoring. Previously, to preserve charge, Apple Watches only sampled heart rate once every five minutes when you weren’t working out. Now, the Series 12 measures heart rate every five seconds, both at rest and during activities. Other wearable companies have been able to do this for ages, but this is a genuinely helpful update for folks who might need to monitor heart rate due to chronic illnesses.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Apple put out <a href="https://www.apple.com/health/pdf/Heart_Rate_Accuracy_Study_2026.pdf">a white paper</a> comparing how accurate its continuous heart rate monitoring is to a gold-standard Polar H10 chest strap, as well as competitors like the Pixel Watch 4, Samsung Galaxy Watch 8, Oura Ring 5, and Whoop across several types of workouts and at rest. (It’s an interesting read for wearable nerds!) I’d need roughly eight arms and legs to replicate this study in a week, and alas, I’m not an octopus. However, I did wear an H10 chest strap during two runs (one steady state and one interval run), a walk, and while at rest. At all times, the Series 12 was within five beats per minute of the H10. There was a slight lag compared to the H10, but in regular use, you’re not going to notice that four-second difference.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’ll continue testing the Series 12 and Ultra 4 against other devices and across activity types, but I’m pretty confident the Apple Watch is now in line with many other popular wearables.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The S11’s impact was also noticeable in testing. Siri AI queries are faster on the Series 12 than my Ultra 3. You still might run into latency as Siri “thinks,” but not as much. If you want more in-depth thoughts about Siri on the wrist, my opinion hasn’t changed from <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/964800/watchos-27-preview-siri-ai-apple-watch-gestures-smartwatch">my watchOS 27 preview</a>. In a nutshell, this is the most capable wrist computer Apple’s made, and adding a single pinch gesture to select items makes one-handed control the best it’s ever been.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I didn’t notice a negative impact to battery life from continuous heart rate tracking. People will gripe that the Series 12 doesn’t have multi-day battery and sticks to the Series 11’s 24-hour battery estimate. But like last year, I maintain that faster charging is a fine enough solution. In a 20-minute charging test, I went from 20 to 64 percent battery. Yes, that does mean charging daily in little spurts, but I’ve yet to have the watch die on me. I vehemently believe everyone needs to let their wrists breathe daily, and showering is the <em>perfect</em> time to go watchless. You’ll survive 20 to 30 minutes of no data.&nbsp;</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Are you ready?</h1>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">All this new hardware paves the way for a much more robust health tracking experience. That’s probably why, later this fall, we’re getting a new, redesigned Health app. From the demos I’ve seen, it’s going to be a dramatic change. There’ll be AI-powered insights, a longevity tab that includes <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/995939/optimizer-health-age-wearables-longevity">a Health Age score</a>, VO2 max assessment tests using your phone’s camera, and even the ability to order a blood panel through Quest Diagnostics for $119. The redesigned app is currently available in the latest iOS 27 developer beta, and I’ll give my early impressions on that soon. However, in this review I’m only going to talk about what’s available to everyone at launch.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The big update ready today is Apple’s take on a readiness score. Readiness scores were popularized ages ago by Fitbit, Oura, and Whoop and are meant to be a digestible gauge of how well you’ve recovered from physiological stress. In essence, how “ready” you are to work out again.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Apple assesses “readiness” through a combination of overnight, daytime, and weekly metrics like activity, sleep score, and overnight vitals encompassing resting heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, and a new metric called recovery heart rate variability (HRV). You might think — wait, my Apple Watch has been able to measure HRV for years. You’d be correct. This new recovery HRV metric uses a different formula and is enabled by the fact that the watch’s updated sensor array can now take <em>any</em> HRV measurement much more frequently. Whereas “regular” HRV is meant to be a longitudinal look at your overall stress and cardiovascular health, Apple uses recovery HRV as a gauge of your daily, short-term strain. (And because this is enabled by the new array, it does mean readiness requires at least a Series 12 or Ultra 4.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It takes a hot minute to generate the score — seven nights of sleep in which you get at least four hours of rest. On the eighth day, you wake up with a score from 0 to 10. A 0 to 1 means you should recover, a 2 to 4 means “pace yourself,” 5 to 7 is a benign “ready,” and anything 8 and above is a signal to “go for it.” My week of serious sleeping and accuracy testing culminated in a readiness score of 7.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’m of the opinion that people intuitively know whether they feel like working out or not. This is a feature that’s most useful for stubborn athletes who overtrain and need a reminder to <em>not</em> burn themselves out. I appreciate this isn’t a static score. A powerful nap or an extra hard workout could cause your readiness score to rise or fall during the day. For the Garmin nerds, I’d say it’s like a combination of Body Battery (which estimates your energy levels in real time) and traditional readiness scores. Given that wearable companies keep pumping out new metrics, I appreciate that Apple’s chosen to consolidate what could’ve been multiple data points into one.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After WWDC, I <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/947005/optimizer-siri-ai-wwdc-2026-health-coaches">wrote</a> that I was relieved Apple <em>wasn’t</em> diving full-on into AI health coaching features. I have to eat my words a teeny bit, considering Apple is clearly starting to incorporate some — though not all — of the AI health trends I’ve seen cropping up over the past two years. So far, I think Apple is carefully weighing what trends to hop on and which ones to avoid. That’s a smart long-term move. But I’m still relieved Siri AI <em>isn’t</em> playing a larger part just yet.&nbsp;</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Audio Intelligence, part one</h1>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">Aside from faster, more power-efficient performance, the S11 chip also enables the most surprising update to the Series 12: ambient listening. That ability is what enables Audio Intelligence, a suite of four features that essentially turn the microphone into a potentially powerful AI tool.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The two flashiest features are Live Rewind and Siri Recap. The former lets you read a short transcript on your wrist of the past 15 seconds, while the latter is a high-level summary of conversations you’ve had during the day. In this summer of public backlash against so-called pervert glasses and Flock cameras, these two features understandably stirred up a lot of concern and emotion on social media. That said, I wasn’t able to test these features because they’re not available yet. They’ll arrive later this year via a software update.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What <em>was</em> available to test was faster Shazam for identifying songs and sound recognition for alerting you of potentially urgent nearby noises. Both of these features require you to opt in and are <em>not</em> turned on by default. If you do turn on music detection, it is <em>extremely</em> fast. You can just pinchy pinch to bring up the Smart Stack, AI will surface the Shazam widget, and boom — there’s the song, correctly identified. (I did trip it up a teensy bit by rapidly switching between songs, but that’s not likely to happen in an organic Shazam experience.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Testing sound recognition, which is an accessibility feature for the deaf or hard of hearing, was less conclusive. It’s designed to flag on the wrist when sounds like doorbells, alarms, or sirens go off. Ironically, I haven’t had my doorbell ring this past week, but I <em>did</em> pull up several YouTube videos of doorbell chimes at various volumes. None triggered the feature. I think that’s a good thing. In my previous tests with other ambient listening AI wearables, they struggled to distinguish between “real” sounds and TV shows. The last thing you want is a fictional doorbell triggering an annoying, real-life alert. A blaring truck horn also didn’t trigger the feature, as it wasn’t a siren. I’ve asked Apple whether there’s specific tuning to minimize false positives, but I haven’t heard back yet.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’ll do a deeper dive into Audio Intelligence once the whole suite of features is available. But to me, it’s clear that Apple has been taking notes about the burgeoning AI wearable space. It’s a deliberate choice to introduce these features on the Apple Watch, an already familiar and beloved device. As other tech companies deal with <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/979869/flock-alpr-ai-surveillance-protest-privacy">surveillance</a> and <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/982414/meta-glasses-work-surveillance-labor-security">harassment</a> concerns, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/992919/apple-siri-ai-audio-intelligence-privacy">Apple’s published a privacy white paper and support documents</a> to position itself as a leader trying to set a new standard. If successful with the public, it’s not a stretch to see how Apple might include these kinds of features on a pair of smart glasses or, perhaps, AirPods with camera sensors. If not, it’s no big miss. The Apple Watch is already a useful, sometimes lifesaving device without Audio Intelligence.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most interesting, and perhaps consequential, piece of this rollout is that it comes from Apple, a wildly successful tech company with the strongest privacy reputation in Silicon Valley. If it can’t make this category of device work, that certainly doesn’t bode well for AI wearables as a whole.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Testing the waters</h1>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">In many ways, this is an incomplete Series 12 review. Judging solely on what’s available today, this is a straightforward hardware upgrade that closes the gap between Apple and the standout perks of more niche rivals like Whoop and Oura.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For those pondering upgrades, Apple has laid a strong foundation with its hardware for some ambitious features down the road. I’d understand if you have qualms about Audio Intelligence and privacy, and to those folks: I’ll remind you that last year’s models are still great, probably available on sale, and don’t come with as many privacy questions.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Otherwise, the Series 12 is a worthy upgrade if you’re sporting a Series 6 or earlier. Series 7 and 8 users should weigh how much they care about AI features versus their device’s current battery life, as watchOS 26 will continue to get security updates. Series 9 and later don’t need to upgrade unless, perhaps, they have a chronic illness that could benefit from the improved continuous heart rate monitoring. The <a href="https://www.theverge.com/smartwatch-review/778037/apple-watch-se-3-review-battery-specs-watchos-26-smartwatch-wearable">excellent SE 3</a> remains my recommendation for smartwatch newbies who just want a basic fitness tracker. I’ll have an Ultra 4-specific review out soon, but I can already tell you that’s for folks who like big screens, better battery life, and aspire to the outdoor life.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the Series 12 only had a new sensor array, updated Health app, and a more useful Siri on the wrist, that’d be a significant update and win on its own. But there’s a lot more here that’s going to change this product in some fundamental ways over the next few months. I have a feeling that Apple’s ambitions for the watch don’t end with health tracking.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we started counting exactly how many times you have to hit “agree” to use devices when we review them, since these are agreements most people don’t read and definitely can’t negotiate.</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can only use the Apple Watch Series 12 with an iPhone. That means you’ll have already agreed to the iPhone’s terms of service and privacy agreements. Optional services, like Apple Pay, Apple Music, or Fitness Plus, will also come with their own agreements. Using the Health app also comes with its own <a href="https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/data/en/health-app/">terms and conditions</a>. Audio Intelligence features are opt-in and are not turned on by default.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you choose to enable cellular service, you’ll also have to agree to your carrier’s terms. I activated cellular on T-Mobile and was asked to agree to one mandatory agreement. If you add any third-party apps or integrations, you must also agree to those individual terms and privacy policies.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">During last week’s Apple Watch announcement, I let out a distinct “Noooo!” in the Steve Jobs Theater. Along with a new readiness metric and a redesigned Health app, Apple had just announced that later this year, it’d be introducing a new longevity feature called Health Age.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a familiar concept in the wearable and health tech world. The idea is that if you put effort into your health and fitness, your physiological age could be “younger” than your chronological age. (Or older if you’re <em>not</em> putting in the effort.) Whoop has “Whoop age.” Oura has a “cardiovascular age” metric. My Withings scale just introduced various “longevity intelligence” features that include separate “heart age” and “vascular age” metrics. Garmin also has a “fitness age score.” At <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DTIouMckTVb/">CES</a>, I sat in front of a so-called longevity mirror that measured the blood flow in my face from a 30-second selfie to estimate my “physiological age” and my “facial skin age.” Earlier this week, I woke up and found out that my <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/921654/optimizer-eight-sleep-ai-summaries-health-wellness">$5,000 smart mattress topper</a> is <em>also</em> estimating my “biological age.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you ask Whoop, I’m supposedly 42. Over the past two years, Oura says my heart has been anywhere from seven years younger to 1.5 years younger than my chronological age. (It’s currently sitting at two years younger.) Withings says my vascular age is a year older than I am, while my heart is four years younger. Garmin says my fitness age is 36.5 years old. That longevity mirror? My facial skin age was apparently 26 (<a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/952744/optimizer-sunscreen-bemotrizinol-fda-health"><em>sunscreen</em></a>,<em> </em>baby!), while my physiological age was 35. My very rude bed said I’m “trending older” this week at 38.7 years old.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My actual age is 38 years old — and that’s what I’m sticking with.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’m not trying to rain on Apple’s (or other wearable makers’) parade. Frankly, I won’t rule on Apple’s version of the feature until I can test it for myself. I bring this all up to illustrate a point about when this type of feature can be genuinely helpful — and when you should treat it with a healthy dose of skepticism. As with most metrics, it’s all in the framing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s true that through a healthy diet, good sleeping habits, and regular exercise, your physiological condition might be <em>better</em> than that of other people who are the same age and fit within a similar demographic. Depending on how a company defines its various longevity-related age scores, your results can identify areas where you can improve. For example, my Whoop age is somewhat cursed because it heavily weights strength training workouts in the algorithm. The last time I tested Whoop, I wasn’t going super hard on lifting heavy and perhaps was a bit too into cardio. If I wanted my Whoop age to improve, lifting weights would’ve been an easy way to tilt that number in my favor.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Objectively, recalibrating my training habits to be more balanced would be a good thing for my long-term health. If you leave it exactly at that, there’s nothing wrong with this type of feature. But culturally speaking, that’s not how these “health age” scores work.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The way I’ve seen people talk about this metric largely hews toward fluffing up your ego. If your health age is older, you probably don’t talk about it. It’s “shameful” even though, really, it’s not. That’s because culturally — at least in the West — getting old isn’t considered a good thing. If your health age is younger, it becomes something to bandy about. Apple’s vice president of health, Sumbul Desai, even says in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DdRadjDtGqc/?stkn=MXZ2N2tkdzBva28xbA==">this Instagram Reel</a> that Health Age could be something you brag about to your friends. That explains why tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson, famous for his quest to never die, would post <a href="https://x.com/bryan_johnson/status/2094944302900367425">this absurd take on X</a> about how aliens would struggle to distinguish him from his teenage son, alongside a chart titled “Is Bryan Johnson More 18 or 49?” Johnson is 49; he looks a little younger, maybe, and his metrics might be comparable to someone much younger on average, but his current state is ultimately just what 49 looks like <em>for him</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Furthermore, your wearable-determined age is oftentimes not capturing the whole picture. You could game the Whoop Age metric to the letter, get your annual physical, and find out that your cholesterol level is through the roof. A reader once related this exact story to me. You could optimize all the controllable lifestyle health factors — diet, exercise, and sleep — like Bryan Johnson and still end up with autoimmune gastritis, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/963917/optimizer-bryan-johnson-biohacking-health">as he has</a>. Some of your health is encoded in your genetics, and while you can better the odds, your ultimate fate is not always something you can decide. We all know of someone who was healthy as a horse and died tragically young because of a freak accident.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Personally, my various health ages have always indicated I’m moderately younger than my chronological age. But even then, that’s not an accurate picture of how I’m aging either. I’m definitely fitter now at 38 than I was at 18. As a teen, I couldn’t even run a mile nonstop, and in my 30s, I have multiple half-marathons under my belt. But my bones also snap, crackle, and pop more. I can’t pull all-nighters <em>without</em> caffeine like I used to, even though I eat much healthier. It doesn’t matter what potions I slather on my hair or what supplements I take; the grays keep coming. I was fitter last year, and my wearables all praised my consistent training to the point that I kept getting injured. I’m less fit this year. I’ve lost roughly 5 pounds of muscle, if smart scales are to be believed, but my metabolic biomarkers are all much, much, much healthier. To the point where earlier this week, my doctor patted me on the back and said she saw all the effort I’d put in over the past year. Yet until recently, my wearables were all convinced my health was in a death spiral.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Health ages, I genuinely believe, were meant to be a helpful way of visualizing how small lifestyle changes can improve overall health as you age. But because they’re all defined differently and use a range of parameters, they’ve become these odd “scores” that can pass faulty judgments on how well you’re doing. I look at my hodgepodge of “ages,” and I can’t tell you what any of it truly means.</p>

Every week, I will be trending older because that’s simply how time works. No matter the wearable metric or magic new drug, none of us is Benjamin Buttoning our way out of that fact.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Which brings me to my current philosophy: I am irreversibly 38, and am doing pretty alright if you ask me. </p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">Whenever the algorithm serves up a steaming pile of looksmaxxing, I flash back to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85HT4Om6JT4">an old sketch</a> from <em>That Mitchell and Webb Look</em>. An ordinary woman is told by a commercial narrator that she’s “leaking, hairy, aging, overweight, and everything hurts.” Women, the smug narrator says, <em>for god’s sake, sort yourselves out </em>by buying roughly $300 of products. After a jump cut, an average man is told to shave and get drunk, guitars blaring in the background. The reason? Because he’s already brilliant.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Back when that sketch first aired in 2009, it was funny because it felt broadly true. But in the age of looksmaxxing, where men are increasingly obsessed with testosterone, smashing their bones in pursuit of a sharp jawline, and optimizing their penises, that sketch feels like a glimpse into antiquity.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, you have men in <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Biohackers/comments/1vtvffy/tadalafil_advice/">subreddits</a> and Facebook groups posting before-and-after pics at the gym, arms flexed for maximum veiny bicep effect. In the comments, they ask for each other’s stacks, protocols, and dosing advice, which include everything from T to unapproved gray-market peptides. Some say it’s to score baddies. Others say it’s to maximize their gains at the gym. A few seem to think turning themselves into science experiments is how they’ll find the fountain of youth. To me, it feels similar to what women have done for ages: buying snake oil that preys on their insecurities.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I take Cialis, but not for sex,” begins one of biohacker and tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson’s <a href="https://x.com/bryan_johnson/status/2065535163749294136?lang=en">X posts</a>. “It’s actually a longevity medicine. Cialis (Tadalafil) is great for the same reason it gives you fantastic erections… it improves blood flow.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tadalafil does, in fact, improve blood flow. The medicine is a vasodilator, meaning it relaxes muscles and widens blood vessels. It’s most widely known as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. (To be clear, it doesn’t cause erections but helps them last when they occur.) It’s also prescribed to alleviate urinary issues in people with enlarged prostates and high blood pressure in the pulmonary artery. Biohackers like Johnson tout a low dose of tadalafil daily as helping lower cardiovascular risk and cognitive decline. Gym rats often microdose tadalafil as a preworkout supplement because, well, the erections are supposedly better <em>and</em> dilating blood vessels is thought to lead to better “muscle pumps.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Enhanced, the company behind the pro-doping <a href="https://www.theverge.com/features/937620/enhanced-games-performance-enhancing-drugs-science-health-sports">Enhanced Games</a>, sells low-dose tadalafil on its site. Clavicular, the most infamous looksmaxxer, has also stated that he’s taken about 5mg of tadalafil in the past as <a href="https://www.mdlinx.com/article/we-broke-down-a-looksmaxxer-s-drug-peptide-regimen-and-don-t-understand-how-he-s-still-alive/01H5G0vBozwPEDIdHHNcWH">part of an extensive stack</a>. This, despite the fact that he’s 20 years old and far from the conventional profile of someone a doctor might prescribe tadalafil to. Popular podcaster Andrew Huberman has also <a href="https://x.com/tbpn/status/2022350426394534334">recommended on his show</a> that every man over 40 should be taking a low dose of tadalafil as a preventative measure.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of course, tadalafil is just like any other medicine. While many may not experience adverse effects at low daily dosages, some will. And like any medication, there are some people who shouldn’t take it and there are drug interactions to be wary of.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’d be one thing if these influencers were just promoting tadalafil. But most are promoting multiple substances, seemingly all of which you need to be a man. Testosterone, for instance, is massively popular in the same cohort. Ninety-one percent of the athletes at the inaugural Enhanced Games dabbled with testosterone. Notably, Pete Hegseth recently announced <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/966770/optimizer-manosphere-testosterone-troops">mandatory testosterone screenings</a> for the troops. Some also hype up retatrutide, an unapproved peptide currently undergoing phase three clinical trials, along with TB-500 and BPC-157, two gray-market peptides colloquially known as the Wolverine stack for their supposed wound healing and muscle recovery benefits. And the more things you stack, the greater the risk that a combination has an unintended effect. In the case of lesser-studied experimental treatments, even doctors may not know what those effects are — and might not know for a long time.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The stated reasons for taking these risks are myriad. But whether it’s because it’ll help someone get jacked, live longer, perform better in bed, or just “have more energy,” it boils down to a singular message: It’ll make you more of a man.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This kind of masculinity is a little bit fantastical,” says Dr. Arthur Burnett, the Patrick C. Walsh professor of urology at Johns Hopkins, referring to the current cultural obsession with “maxxing.” Burnett should know. On top of over three decades as a men’s health expert, his research into nitric oxide biochemical mechanisms in erectile tissue helped pave the way for drugs like Viagra.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Regarding men taking on all of these additional requirements, he says that “there’s not really a scientific basis.”<br><br>“I think it’s unfortunate that we’ve pushed the pendulum in a direction that may be harmful, frankly, psychologically at the very least but possibly even physically to the body. It could be problematic trying to adopt medical terms like ‘prevention’ and ‘men’s health’.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Burnett is essentially pointing to the divide between how clinicians and the biohacking / looksmaxxing communities view medicine. On the one side, you have medical professionals who largely view drugs as a way to treat deficiencies and bring people back to a “normal” baseline. On the other, you have influencers and enthusiasts (which can include clinicians) who believe that drugs can and ought to be used to “enhance” people beyond their natural limits. It’s a tension that’s at the heart of so many debates in the wellness wild west.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Preventative care should really be something that those who are at risk or have health adversities can make changes in a way that’s going to correct a problem. What you have here is completely healthy people doing things that can be problematic,” explains Burnett.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Testosterone, he says, is a classic example. Otherwise healthy men who over-supplement the hormonal steroid often inadvertently make themselves infertile. For some men, too much testosterone can also trigger a genetic predisposition for hair thinning — which looksmaxxers often address by taking minoxidil. Add another supplement, drug, or product to combat the side effects of minoxidil — which include dizziness, headaches, and bloating — and that’s how you end up with a stack.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What gets lost in all these stacks and protocols is that health isn’t about optimization. For many young men, “optimizing” seems to be less of a goal than a vaguely defined baseline they’re expected to maintain forever. Anything less is a failure, a weakness — unhealthy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A depressing way to spend an afternoon is rifling through looksmaxxing and gear forums. (I don’t recommend staying too long — unless you feel like torturing yourself reading 4chan-esque insults and slurs about penis size and “weekly slays.”)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In one <a href="https://looksmax.org/threads/bought-cialis.1440032/">post</a>, a supposed 18-year-old asks for advice dosing Cialis to have better erections and “get more flaccid hang.” In a biohacking <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Biohackers/comments/1suev20/daily_tadalafil_25mg/">subreddit</a>, a 30-year-old essentially crowdsources whether he’s developing a “dependency” on tadalafil. At no point, despite all the posturing, do any of the men in the posts I read seem to be genuinely happy. They’re often boastful about how good they feel or how many conquests they’ve had. But mostly, there seems to be an undercurrent of angry self-loathing. A desperate urge to “fix” oneself for… what or whom exactly? I never find a coherent answer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Admittedly, I’m not a man. I will never know what it means to be a man or experience the societal pressures that men face. But there’s something strange about how the internet is amplifying a subsect of men turning themselves into science experiments. There’s a veritable pipeline from relatively benign trends like <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/897715/optimizer-protein-proteinmaxxing-proteinwashing-wellness">boy kibble protein-washing</a> and news stories about RFK Jr. working out shirtless with Kid Rock to whatever it is the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Dc69Jj6kncZ/?stkn=dWh0eXdrdWYzMmMz">Enhanced Games</a> and <a href="https://x.com/bryan_johnson/status/2094944302900367425">Bryan Johnson are doing</a>. It’s easy to write off, until <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/909736/optimizer-whoop-oura-wearable-hype-cycle">Whoop’s AI recommends your boss up his testosterone levels</a> — not because he’s deficient, but because he’s not <em>optimized</em> for performance.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It happens in my clinic periodically — guys thinking they need enhancements, or they’re unhappy with certain interventions, or they feel they’re not performing at a certain level,” says Burnett. “It’s counterproductive as it actually promotes stigma [around men’s health] because they can’t live up to what they think is the notion of the ideal man.” That, he says, creates more anxiety, stress, embarrassment, and shame. On top of that, it makes it hard for men to speak more openly about genuine health issues or seek a professional’s help. Anything “abnormal” becomes something to be suffered in silence or supplemented away.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For now, it’s probably contained to a chronically online niche. (Burnett says these behaviors aren’t heavily prevalent in his practice just yet, but then again — how likely are the most susceptible men to trust the medical establishment when that’s the first thing wellness grifters seek to discredit?) But this niche is loud and it loves to post. Eventually, those messages embed themselves in the broader culture — even if everyone knows better.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The only thing I can conclude is that the looksmaxxers are not okay. I hope that one day they will be, that this is a passing fad that one day we’ll look back and laugh at. But in the meantime, I’ll leave this with some advice from Burnett.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“As long as we’re living healthy, we’re doing the right thing. Please accept that you are a good man for who you are, and don’t be swayed by the influencers.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/991812/apple-watch-series-12-announcement" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.theverge.com/tech/991812/apple-watch-series-12-announcement">Apple Watch Series 12</a> once again starts at $399 for the aluminum case option in space gray, black, light gold, and dark bronze aluminum. The natural or radiant gold titanium version costs $699, and the night blue or pearl white ceramic costs $899. Apple says this year’s watch offers up to 24 hours of “everyday” battery life, and now offers up to 10 hours of battery during outdoor workouts and supports faster charging with up to 12 hours’ worth recharged in just 15 minutes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ceramic Series 12 sure does look and feel nice in person. The night blue version is very fetching, but the stark pearl white is also très chic on the wrist. The new dark bronze did look a lot darker in person, however. Like how the dark green Series 7 looked a bit less green and more blackish green, there’s a similar vibe with the bronze.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Series 12 runs on a new S11 chip that powers a few new Audio Intelligence Siri AI features, including Sound Recognition, Live Rewind, and Siri Recap. It also got some health upgrades, including new optical and electrical heart sensors with support for continuous background heart rate sensing that takes readings every five seconds. There’s also a new Health Age feature that compares your health metrics to your chronological age, and a Readiness feature that gives you a score for how to handle the day ahead based on your recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score. The Readiness feature will be limited to the Series 12 and Ultra 4, however, because it requires the new heart rate sensor array.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Speaking of the array, this is the first major update on this front in a while. You can definitely see the difference side by side. Notably, the Apple reps on hand pointed out that the new Series 12 and Ultra 4 have a “32-petal design,” whereas the older watches had a two-petal design. This refers to the spoke-like lines coming out of the electrode. It should theoretically enable much more accurate readings. You can also see that the optical sensors themselves are situated much closer together. This is to help minimize light leakage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/990290/apple-watch-ultra-4-smartwatch-wearable-availability-pricing" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.theverge.com/tech/990290/apple-watch-ultra-4-smartwatch-wearable-availability-pricing">Apple Watch Ultra 4</a> also includes the new S11 chip and Audio Intelligence features. It starts at $799 and comes in natural and black titanium, along with a premium Apple Watch Hermès&nbsp;version. Apple says the Ultra 4 offers up to 50 hours of battery life. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s not just time for any old Apple event, but one that’s expected to usher in a new era for the company. This is the first iPhone keynote to be led by Apple’s <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/915272/apple-john-ternus-tim-cook">newly anointed CEO John Ternus</a>, and all signs and rumors have been pointing to it being the one that also debuts a <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/907856/iphone-fold-dummy-design-delay-production">foldable iPhone</a>. Ternus has <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/987583/apple-john-ternus-staff-memo">already billed this as</a> “a huge launch . . . that’s going to be phenomenal.” What bigger and flashier way to step into the limelight than with a new halo product of an iPhone?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We’re also likely to hear about OS updates, Apple Watches, and possibly some AirPods. But this might be an unconventional event in more ways than one. It’s also possible the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/979231/apple-base-iphone-18-launch-delayed">standard iPhone 18 won’t come until the new year</a> — leaving just the pricey Pros and folding phone to be announced. And with <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/839353/pc-ram-shortage-pricing-spike-news">RAMageddon</a> raging on, there’s a chance everything will be more expensive this time around, too.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">My mom was a dramatic woman prone to overreacting. When I was a snotty teen, I told her she needed to take several chill pills. Most of the time, I was right. Back in 2004, when she was swearing in Korean and hurtling down the highway in a Honda Odyssey that had no business going 20mph over the speed limit, swerving in and out of traffic as I vomited bile into a plastic baggie, I have to admit that she was right to rush me to the emergency room.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After two days of nonstop vomiting, I thought I just had a gnarly stomach bug. Instead, I watched as doctors furrowed their brows as I failed to keep down tiny sips of water. They asked if I was diabetic. My mom said no; I was just on a ridiculous low-carb diet. Dizzy and disoriented, I was told to try peeing on a strip of paper. It changed colors. After that, things went blurry as they frantically worked to get me into a bed. I don’t remember much else, except waking up several hours and two whole IV drips later to a doctor lecturing my mom about why unsupervised diets in teens can be dangerous.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In an ill-advised attempt to lose some weight, I’d accidentally created a situation where the ketones in my blood had reached toxic levels — the official term: ketoacidosis.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This memory was the first thing I thought of when I heard last week that Abbott had obtained <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-authorizes-first-wearable-device-continuously-monitors-both-ketone-levels-and-blood-sugar">FDA authorization for a new continuous glucose monitor</a> (CGM). The Libre Duo is the first 2-in-1 CGM that measures both glucose and ketone levels. As for <em>why</em> diabetics would want to know about ketones, it’s the same reason why I ended up in the ER roughly 22 years ago: ketoacidosis.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ketoacidosis sucks, but it is somewhat common for diabetics. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) occurs when there’s not enough insulin to turn blood glucose into energy. The liver then turns to burning fat, and ketones are a byproduct of that process. That’s not inherently bad, but too many ketones cause blood to become highly acidic. In diabetics, this can be an alarmingly fast process. It can also be fatal if left untreated. It’s typically a concern in Type 1 diabetics, since they don’t produce enough insulin. However, it can also occur in Type 2 diabetes — which develops over time, often due to lifestyle factors.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It’s actually the most common hyperglycemic emergency for people living with diabetes. It’s the leading cause of hospitalization, and it’s increased quite rapidly over the last decade,” says Marc Taub, vice president of technical operations for Abbott&#8217;s diabetes care business. “The symptoms of rising ketones are easily missed — they’re a lot like a flu or infection.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to Taub, the new Abbott sensor measures beta-hydroxybutyrate — a type of ketone — and is intended to function like a “check engine light.” Worn for 10 days at a time, the sensor monitors ketones in the background but will actively alert users when approaching dangerous levels, much like how CGMs do for glucose. The idea is to not only provide an actionable warning system, but to do so in a way that’s already familiar to diabetics. It uses the same app, works with smartwatches, and allows caregivers to monitor the glucose / ketone levels of loved ones — a potentially huge benefit, as DKA is a significant risk among diabetic children.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“DKA is one of the primary fears or dangers of uncontrolled or unmonitored diabetes,” says Dr. David Ahn, chief of diabetes at the Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center for Hoag Hospital. Ahn notes that ketone monitoring is much more common in children as part of a standard diabetes education protocol. “The overwhelming majority of adult clinicians, and even endocrinologists like myself, don’t routinely prescribe ketone strips … in a perfect world, [ketone strips] would be one of the things that we send patients home with. But in practical scenarios, it often just isn’t a top priority.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ahn also notes that ketone monitoring could be helpful in two specific treatment scenarios. The first is for insulin pump users. They face a higher risk of DKA because if there’s an undetected pump issue — such as a leak or connectivity issues — it could inadvertently lead to an interrupted insulin supply and, fairly quickly, ketoacidosis. The second scenario is for diabetics taking SGLT2 inhibitors — a class of oral medications that help lower blood sugar by helping diabetics excrete excess glucose in urine.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“SGLT2 inhibitors are quite common, but they’re primarily a Type 2 diabetes drug,” says Ahn, who says that anecdotally, clinicians have found that it helps with Type 1 diabetics too. “The problem is that our biggest clue that a patient has DKA is high blood sugar. When you’re taking an SGLT2 inhibitor, you have this uncommon pattern where your sugar might not be that high, but you can be in raging ketoacidosis.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That, Ahn says, has been the major reason why the FDA has yet to approve SGLT2 inhibitors for Type 1 diabetics, even though it could help control blood sugar. So on paper, a 2-in-1 glucose and ketone monitor could act as a fail-safe, opening up new treatment options for Type 1 diabetics. That, combined with helping diabetic children and insulin pump users, means this tech should be a no-brainer, right?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Well, yes and no.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.theverge.com/features/907359/cgms-optimizing-metabolism-dexcom-abbott-wearables-health-tech">CGMs are an imperfect technology</a>. Peruse any diabetic subreddit, and you’ll see folks who — while grateful for the peace of mind CGMs can provide — have concerns about accuracy, data fatigue, and interpreting what their glucose levels mean. Glance at <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/diabetes_t1/comments/1vz8chj/continuous_glucose_and_ketone_monitoring_device/">discussions</a> about the Libre Duo, and you’ll find plenty of Type 1 diabetics who aren’t sold on the idea. Some diabetics claim they haven’t needed to check for ketones in over a decade. Others worry about false positives triggering disruptive alerts. (And after testing the Dexcom G7 for the past few weeks, alerts can be <em>quite</em> loud.)&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I think it’s going to maybe be a rocky first year, or couple of years, but I’m also excited because I think we’re going to learn a lot. There’s so much we don’t know about ketone levels on a continuous basis,” Ahn says. “If you think about it, a ketone strip doesn’t even typically give you a number. It’s a color code of mild, moderate, and severe.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is one of the clearest examples of how wearable technology can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the tech opens up a bigger picture of what’s going on in the human body under a wide range of previously unmeasurable scenarios. That can end up being helpful for medical discoveries and for building a greater understanding of certain conditions than spot-check tests. It’s why so many medical researchers see the potential in using wearables. However, the challenge is tuning the massive amount of continuous wearable data to identify and draw a user’s attention to the correct signals.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Abbott’s Taub says the company worked with the FDA and the clinicians to come up with ketone performance standards for the Duo. But even among the professionals, there’s still a degree of guesswork when it comes to interpreting new data.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“There was a recent consensus statement published by top experts basically saying, ‘This is our guidance on ketone monitoring.’ They set a cutoff of 3 mmol/L. But even in that article — and I’ve talked to the authors of that article — that’s our best <em>guess</em> as to what numbers we should start worrying about,” explains Ahn. He went on to say that factors like pregnancy, illness, fasting, and heavy exercise are all instances outside of DKA that could cause ketone levels to temporarily rise.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The medical community is a little anxious about understanding the signal-to-noise ratio,” Ahn says. “I think there’s going to be a lot of false positives.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eventually, it’s likely that the Duo sensor will follow a familiar wearable script. It’ll undoubtedly enable the medical community to learn a great deal more about ketones and DKA. The early stages will be a tad bumpy, especially since wearable tech has <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/984991/optimizer-oura-ring-lawsuit-sleep-tracking-wearables">a complicated relationship</a> <a href="https://www.theverge.com/health/715102/dangerously-blurry-line-between-wellness-and-medical-tech">with accuracy</a>. For now, Taub says the Duo will require a prescription, and Abbott doesn’t have immediate plans to expand access to over-the-counter applications. But it’s not hard to see a scenario where, down the line, the Duo’s technology is marketed to a wider <em>consumer</em> base.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Metabolic tech is the new wearable frontier. Health tech startups increasingly <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/859132/optimizer-ces-2026-metabolism-bodily-fluids-health-tech-wearables">want bodily fluids</a> to measure metabolism. GLP-1s are an ever more popular treatment. The populace is experimenting with gray market peptides. The keto diet — which gets its name from ketones and where a metabolic state of fat-burning called ketosis is the ultimate goal — has been popular for close to 20 years now. You don’t have to be a genius to see how various consumer wearable companies could look at the Duo and see a new data field riddled with dollar signs. From there, it’s not hard to see wellness influencers flattening a genuinely helpful technology as the “secret hack” the medical institution “doesn’t want you to know.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is, after all, what happened with CGMs.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Duo makes me reflect on some periods in my life where I was less wise. I ended up in the ER with ketoacidosis, a rare feat for non-diabetics, because I was a stressed-out teen lured into a fad diet by glossy magazines and celebrities wasting away in low-rise jeans. Would some version of the Duo have helped prevent that? The self-quantifying nerd in me says yes. The wearable expert in me suspects that, given my previous experiences with CGMs, I personally may have avoided an ER trip and instead spiraled into data obsession and then fatigue.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">None of this is to say that the Libre Duo is bad. Wearable tech is always a neutral tool with the potential to enable a lot of good — it just requires thought and discernment to be used in a truly healthy way. The thing is, the vast majority of people in their day-to-day lives won&#8217;t need to monitor for ketoacidosis. When medical science adds another data set to our lives, it&#8217;s important we ask why; that we understand what it actually tells us, and not just what we hope it says, or what we hope it can do for us.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">Oura’s getting sued.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A recently filed class-action <a href="https://clarksonlawfirm.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/COMPLAINT-26-cv-08686-Surber-v.-Oura-Inc.-et-al.pdf">complaint</a> against the smart ring maker alleges that the company has duped customers by claiming it can accurately track different sleep stages. A smart ring <em>can’t</em> possibly do that, the suit says, because the Oura Ring doesn’t directly measure your brain waves. Instead, Oura uses AI models to take advantage of “desperate consumers who struggle with their sleep … by selling faulty AI-based inference as reliable science.” The suit frames Oura Ring as no more accurate than a “coin flip.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I first saw this lawsuit, I laughed it off. It assumes that Oura users aren&#8217;t smart enough to know the ring on their finger can&#8217;t measure what&#8217;s going on inside their skull.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All wearable devices collect data and then use algorithms — or machine learning AI — to make inferences about various health metrics. As a noninvasive tool, no wearable <em>directly </em>measures anything except motion. The benefit is that noninvasive wearables allow for passive, all-day monitoring. Responsible companies then validate those metrics against clinical, gold-standard methods to create consumer-oriented screening tools and monitoring metrics. It’s not always the most accurate, but even broadly accurate data has improved — and even saved — many lives.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Again, I laughed because, surely, no one would take this lawsuit seriously. Wearables might not measure brain waves, but <em>other</em> measurable physiological changes happen during various sleep stages too. Your heart rate slows, your body temperature rises and falls, and your body paralyzes your muscles during REM so you don’t act out your dreams. But then I logged on and saw the discourse. Several outlets had covered the lawsuit. It was popping up on social media and in Reddit forums. Some commenters used it as a way to say, “Aha! I knew these devices were off!” Others said this discrepancy was illustrative of everything wrong with this current era of optimized obsession. A few wearable nerds reacted the same way I did. Oura <a href="https://ouraring.com/blog/how-oura-measures-sleep-and-validates-accuracy/">published its own rebuttal</a> to the suit, linking to several validation studies in peer-reviewed journals for its sleep tracking algorithm, alongside <a href="https://ouraring.com/blog/the-science-behind-consumer-wearable-sleep-technology-according-to-a-sleep-scientist/">a supportive op-ed from a sleep researcher</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a wearables expert, I find the lawsuit’s logic to be lacking, but it did help me identify the real problem here. We still struggle to remember what the point of wearable tech is and how to use it properly. Case in point: Accuracy is a bit of a red herring in this conversation because that’s not always the <em>point</em> of a wearable.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All wearables vary when it comes to sleep tracking accuracy. In general, independent third-party reviews find they are pretty good at detecting when you fall asleep and wake up. Sleep stages are where things get murky, as each company uses a proprietary algorithm to <em>estimate</em> if you’re in REM, deep, or light sleep based on motion, temperature, and heart rate sensors. They can get things wrong for several reasons, ranging from sleep position to battery levels.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wearables are meant to be used as a tool to track long-term trends. Chances are, if you’re sleeping poorly, you can logically pinpoint a reason why without a gadget. Maybe you drank too much before bed. Perhaps your cat yowls at 5:30AM for breakfast. But, say you’re not an observant person, and there is no obvious reason. The point of a consumer sleep tracker is to get a bird’s-eye view of your sleep pattern. It’s a means of helping you reflect on the lifestyle reasons why your sleep might be doodoo. And in the absence of a reasonable explanation, it’s a tool to help facilitate conversations with a doctor. It does not and <em>will not</em> ever fully replace clinical polysomnography or sleep clinics.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because wearables rely on indirect methods of estimating health metrics, there is <em>always</em> a possibility that your results might be wackadoodle wonky here and there. The point is the device should be consistent enough to give you a good idea when something is <em>really off</em>. A “check engine light,” if you will. Sometimes, you’ll get false alarms. But the point is you’ve checked in and are more aware.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s some nuance here. If I’m generous, this lawsuit could be a good-faith attempt to force health tech companies to be much more precise with their marketing claims. Sometimes less scrupulous companies <em>do</em> embed blatant science-washing into their marketing. I agree that sometimes health tech companies can present features in a misleading way that can cause material harm. This, in my opinion, just doesn’t happen to be one of them.  (Again, Oura is almost overly aggressive in showing the receipts of its peer-reviewed scientific research.)&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You could argue that more companies ought to include easily accessible educational blurbs. That’s especially true now given the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/health/715102/dangerously-blurry-line-between-wellness-and-medical-tech">dangerously blurred line</a> between wellness and medical tech. It’d be nice if more wearable companies explained that the closer a feature hews toward medical tech or diagnostic capabilities, the more accuracy matters. If it’s simply to monitor trends, eh. It matters more that a device is consistently inaccurate by the same amount because measuring trends is the most important thing. That’s why certain screening features require FDA clearance and wellness features do not. The <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/981957/google-pixel-watch-5-review-wearables-smartwatch">Pixel Watch 5</a>’s new breathing emergency feature? Accuracy matters quite a bit there because the watch will call emergency services on your behalf if it detects you may have stopped breathing for an extended period of time. Sleep stages, however, are a clear example of a wellness feature meant to help you monitor long-term trends and how lifestyle choices may impact your perceived sleep quality. If it’s not the most accurate, well, the stakes are much lower.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But to say that wearables companies don’t extensively plaster their UI with educational information about how certain metrics ought to be interpreted and how they’re derived is also untrue. These companies include warnings and disclosures within apps that explain that certain features are <em>wellness</em> and not diagnostic. In Oura’s case, any curious consumer could google “Is the Oura Ring accurate for sleep stages?” and get a succinct AI overview that reads “The Oura Ring is reasonably accurate for tracking general sleep duration and identifying when you fall asleep or wake up, but its breakdown of specific sleep stages is only an estimate.” That’s then followed by dozens of links to studies comparing the sleep accuracy of various trackers and explanatory articles by tech journalists doing the exact same thing.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So why does a class action lawsuit like this even exist? Perhaps the fault is with tech journalists like myself if we preemptively dismiss an opportunity to reinforce context or fail to provide the appropriate analysis. Maybe we’re not writing explainers in the most accessible way. I hesitate to blame consumers. This is a genuinely confusing space, but then again, I find most people are smarter than they’re given credit for. Even so, there’s also only so much educational material that can be provided if a user opts not to read any of it. Ultimately, it&#8217;s on companies to make sure consumers understand the limitations of their products. For all the lawsuit harps on accuracy, its most compelling argument is that sweeping marketing claims may lead to consumers misunderstanding how a product ought to be used.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In any case, the takeaway from this lawsuit shouldn’t be that Oura — or wearables at large — are scam products with no value. If that were true, Apple wouldn’t introduce its latest smartwatch every year with real-life testimonials of how it saves lives. Researchers wouldn’t have <a href="https://gizmodo.com/can-a-smart-watch-detect-covid-19-1833409102">flocked to wearables to study illness detection</a> during the covid-19 pandemic. To me, this lawsuit is sort of its own “check engine light.” If people are truly duped and do not understand how these features work, it’s an opportunity to recalibrate the conversation.&nbsp;</p>

His <a href="https://www.petmd.com/cat/general-health/cat-primordial-pouch">primordial pouch</a>, originally thought to protect cats’ squishy insides, hangs low and wobbles to and fro. Once, when he was five or six, a vet sternly sat my spouse and me down, gravely stating, “He’s simply too young to be <em>this</em> fat.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pablo didn’t care, but we were traumatized. Now that he’s 10, the vets have repeatedly scolded us. All 20 pounds of his rotundity, they say, cannot continue. The specter of diabetes and kidney problems, and the fact that his obesity combined with a too-small pee-pee hole increases his risk of urinary crystals, mean that a diet is urgent.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I hear this every year. I keep saying “We are <em>trying</em>!!” The vets say, “Try harder! There are plenty of gadgets and toys you can use to stimulate enrichment, manage food, and encourage exercise!” What I don’t think the vets understand is that the state of pet tech is simply no match for Pablo.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As with humans, the key to weight loss in cats is a strict calorie deficit and increased activity. The problem is diets can be notoriously difficult for felines. Their small bodies don’t require <em>that</em> much food, spaying or neutering alters cat metabolisms, and they are famously finicky creatures. They’re also reliant on routines and, in Pablo’s case, can be heavily resistant to change.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pablo’s war on pet tech and diets all started with a Litter-Robot 4. We initially got it because Pablo’s poops were olfactory crimes. Manually scooping them was causing marital strife. (“He’s <em>YOUR</em> cat,” is what I’d say early on in our relationship. “He’s <em>OUR</em> cat,” my spouse retorted once we got married.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile, lifting Pablo onto one of our scales to monitor his weight would earn many yowls and skippity paps to the face. The <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/978323/whisker-litter-robot-5-pro-review">Litter-Robot</a> seemed like a clever solution because (1) automated scooping and (2) there’s a built-in scale. Whenever he does his business, I can log into the companion app to see how much he weighs (as well as monitor his bowel movements).&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For a time, Pablo allowed us our folly. He was not a fan of the Litter-Robot. He eyed the spinning, globe-shaped bonnet with suspicion, but as a sophisticated, fancy boy, he wasn’t prone to pooping just <em>anywhere</em>. But then we moved to a four-story row home. My spouse and I viewed the three flights of stairs as a good chance for us, Pablo, and our other cat, Petey, to get in more steps. Three of us agreed. You can guess which one of us did not.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For logistical and cleaning purposes, we were not schlepping the Litter-Robot 4 up beyond the second floor. The thing weighs 24 pounds empty, and the thought of repeatedly carrying that up and down three flights of stairs to hose it down was too much. (It’s already bad enough that any litter box on an upper floor requires regularly carrying 15- to 30-pound bags of fresh litter up and down multiple flights.) In our previous apartments, we’d always put the Litter Robot, automated feeders, and pet fountains near the kitchen. But cats are territorial creatures. Before moving, Pablo and Petey shared spaces and litter boxes begrudgingly. With more space, they each established their own kingdoms. Pablo claimed the top floor — the bedroom. Petey claimed the second, where the Litter-Robot and the comfy couch reside. With the resulting borders settled into law, Pablo promptly stopped using the Litter-Robot. He also refuses to venture downstairs, except at 10PM each night to yell and enforce bedtime. We tried to encourage him to use the expensive poop robot anyway.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In protest, he began shitting on the carpet right outside my third-floor office door. The turd war continued for three weeks before we caved.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’m not rich enough to buy a <em>second</em> Litter-Robot. The newest model costs $800, and while I enjoy a workout, the Litter-Robot 5 is even heavier at 28.7 pounds empty. So I bought a $20 stainless steel, not-very-smart litter box — and a smart pet scale designed to go under it. To save our noses, we put the litter box into one of those stealthy litter box enclosures that look like a regular credenza.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pablo did not appreciate the new setup. At first, I thought he objected to his new pellet litter. We switched to an ultrafine microcrystal litter for his sensitive paws. He continued shitting outside my office. Turns out, he didn’t like that the under-box scale made the litter box enclosure feel cramped.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We removed it, and now I’m back to weighing him manually every few weeks.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pablo doesn’t enjoy any form of movement that doesn’t end in a cuddle or treat. Ball tracks? Not a fan. The extremely cute <a href="https://gizmodo.com/not-even-this-adorable-robot-could-get-my-fat-cat-to-ex-1846872741">Enabot robot</a>? Icily ignored. We tried robot vacuums so he’d be forced to at least move rooms. Eventually, he started sitting on tables and chairs, watching disdainfully as the robovacs jammed themselves into furniture. Wand toys are viewed with snooty disgust. After a few half-hearted swats, he flops on his back and declares playtime over. He took one look at a cat tower and went, “Nah.” Pablo’s primary amusements are his catnip squirrel, pancaking his emotional support Squishmallows, and <em>sometimes</em>, if the mood strikes him, chasing a laser for three minutes. All he really wants is for me and my spouse to sit quietly with him on the bed, give him chin scratches, obey his strict sleeping schedule, and feed him on time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Case in point, I sometimes test smart alarm clocks. But as I wrote in my review of the now-defunct <a href="https://www.theverge.com/23571221/amazon-halo-rise-review-sleep-tracking-smart-lamp">Amazon Halo Rise</a>, Pablo is an “<a href="https://www.sfspca.org/resource/affection-eaters/">affection eater</a>.” This may seem absurd to non-cat owners, but some cats genuinely insist on company at mealtime. Pablo requires a <em>witness</em>, someone to sit on the floor next to him as he painstakingly eats each kibble bit one by one. (And to guard his meal from Petey.) He insists breakfast is promptly at 5:30AM, so when the automatic feeder goes off, I must sit with him for 10 to 15 minutes as he eats, occasionally redirecting Petey’s greedy face to his own bowl. He obviously doesn’t like any gadget that may encourage a variable wake-up time, such as a smart alarm clock that gently glows depending on sunrise times. He has knocked plenty off the nightstand, viewing his method of smothering me with his fluffy belly as superior.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After viewing some TikToks of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPjZiiZyewk">cats enjoying walking pads</a>, I called in a smart walking pad for review. Healthy for me, potentially healthy for my cats to get more steps in. Alas, this too ended up being a bust. I got <a href="https://www.theverge.com/24291281/mobvoi-home-walking-pad-review-treadmills-fitness">stressed out by the smart features</a>. Even the more mischievous Petey, with his one brain cell, could not process the concept of <em>himself</em> walking on the pad. All he did was bat at my feet while <em>I</em> walked on it. Pablo <em>rolled off the belt</em> when I tried putting him on it at a very low speed.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In case you were wondering, Pablo also doesn’t consent to the pet surveillance state. He’s a handsome boy, but he hates getting his photo taken. Every single photo taken for this piece required bribes and cajoling. Most of the photos I have of him on my camera roll are of him sleeping, belly up. He’s learned to turn his head away from smartphone cameras. Petey now also does the same. So much so that my main use for smart glasses cameras is to get cute cat videos. (They have not yet learned what a white recording light is.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I installed various pet cams because I was curious about how often Pablo was actually eating and moving around. I can also be a helicopter pet mom whenever we travel. But whereas Petey will purposefully mog for the pet cam, rolling around on the living room floor at 3AM like a demonic potato, Pablo will slink off into closets outside the camera’s field of view. I thought we outsmarted him by buying a fancy Petlibro automatic feeder with a built-in camera before a two-week vacation to Italy. Nope. We’d only just landed in Rome when, after checking in on the feed, we saw that the feeder had been knocked over.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I had to immediately call my pet sitter to go and cater to his whims.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pablo 7, Tech 1 (I count the smart glasses as a win)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After eight years of technological warfare, however, there are <em>two</em> gadgets that Pablo tolerates — likes, even. One is the Petlibro cat fountain. He loves a fountain. The other is <a href="https://www.theverge.com/24279552/eight-sleep-pod-4-ultra-review-tracking">our Eight Sleep smart mattress cover</a>. Like all cats, he loves a warm surface. So now, instead of climbing into a toasty bed every night, I have a staring contest with Pablo as he dares me to move him from my spot. I always win because I can just shove him over. But it’s not without some irritated meows and a lot of sass.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As for Pablo’s weight loss plan… The next obvious step would be RFID feeders to be 100 percent sure that Petey and Pablo aren’t overeating when we <em>can’t</em> supervise meals. You stick a collar with an RFID tag so that the feeder only allows a specific cat to eat. The only problem is they’re expensive, our current feeders aren’t broken, and Pablo hates collars. I <em>have</em> debated sticking a pet fitness tracker on Pablo. Ultimately, I decided against it because not only does he hate collars, but I already attempted it with <a href="https://gizmodo.com/i-put-a-fitness-tracker-on-my-lazy-dog-it-did-not-go-a-1844364696">my elderly Yorkie</a> <a href="https://www.theverge.com/23162644/whistle-health-review-pet-fitness-tracker">before she passed</a>. The data tends to be more wellness-focused than actually useful for encouraging exercise. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Frankly, we adopted Petey because we thought a younger cat might encourage him to move around and play. Petey adores Pablo. The affection remains unrequited. My spouse has given up. Pablo is just destined to be round, they say. They constantly remind me that we already strictly control his food intake, and the pounds ain’t coming off.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I happen to think that maybe this is a Petey-and-tech problem. Perhaps a third kitten might do the trick.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">For the past week, I’ve been testing the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/e/981957">Google Pixel Watch 5</a>. In many ways, it’s a typical, modern smartwatch. In others, it feels like one part of a wearable future that’s increasingly in flux. Everyone I’ve spoken to in wearable tech has roughly the same goal — soon, your tracker of choice will feature a helpful AI coach, “check engine” alerts that preventively flag hard-to-detect health conditions, and personalized health recommendations based on <em>your</em> lived experiences and needs.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s certainly what’s being pitched. But so far, it seems like most companies don’t know how exactly we’re going to get there.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">AI coaches? Even the best ones are too chatty, fixate on one random detail you shared during setup, and require a ton of hand-holding. “Check engine” alerts can be useful and have been documented as saving lives. <a href="https://www.theverge.com/analysis/756994/rfk-jr-wearables-maha-health-wearables-disordered-eating">They can also spark health anxiety</a> and the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/health/715102/dangerously-blurry-line-between-wellness-and-medical-tech">regulatory quagmire</a> can be expensive to navigate. Personalized health holds great promise, but requires <em>so</em> much of your private data while also <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/931148/optimizer-pmos-pcos-personalized-health">being subject to AI’s myriad shortcomings</a>. Even now, most people think of wearable devices as fancy step trackers.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Historically, wearables have been very focused on hardcore health enthusiasts,” Rishi Chandra, Google’s vice president of health and home, tells me at a roundtable of tech reporters in New York ahead of Made by Google. Usually, tech companies like to keep mum on future ideas and plans. But recently, Google seems eager to lay out its particular vision.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“There’s a huge market of people who are not thinking about their health every day. Today, wearable penetration is about 30 percent — 70 percent of the population has no notion of wearables,” Chandra adds.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In other words, wearable tech is still in its early days with a lot of untapped potential. The smartwatch is not the end-all, be-all. The fact that wearables can also capture a vast array of personal data compounds that. That’s one reason why, during last year’s Made by Google event, Chandra and Sandeep Waraich, Google’s senior director of wearables, told me that <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/767765/ai-hardware-google-pixel-gemini-wearables-ambient-computing">the future of AI gadgets won’t just be a single device</a>. It’ll be an entire ecosystem of diverse accessories.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since that chat, I’ve already seen several signs supporting Google’s multi-wearable ecosystem thesis. Multiple companies have pivoted to AI glasses (or as Google calls it, “intelligent eyewear”). But we’ve also seen <em>other</em> wearable form factors start gaining steam. See: the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/978295/optimizer-screenless-wearables-fitness-trackers-smart-rings">horde of screenless Whoop dupes and smart rings</a>. In the AI sphere, some wearable makers are eschewing the health tracking aspect altogether. Some smart jewelry startups like Vocci, <a href="https://tayanecklace.com/">Taya</a>, and <a href="https://www.theverge.com/gadgets/971744/smart-ring-ai-gadget-stream-index">Sandbar</a> envision rings and pendants as a way to record and transcribe your thoughts using AI.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are <em>not</em> proven ideas. That there are so many different approaches is a pretty big indication that the entire industry is in the process of throwing wearable spaghetti at a wall, desperately hoping that <em>something</em> will stick and be the next smartphone. It’s enough to make a senior wearable reviewer excited — because yay! Weird experimental products — and also mad — because no! Weird experimental products that don’t work as advertised! Still, there’s a nugget of truth in this new search for new wearable form factors and use cases.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Wearables are a great conduit for presence. And it goes both ways. As AI reaches you in a respectful way, and as you want to interact with it, these interactions will become more frequent, but also quicker and glanceable,” says Waraich, noting that Google views seven seconds as its current benchmark for any one wrist-based interaction. The question now is figuring out the ideal surface for each specific technological task. For example: What device should you use to check your calendar? Your phone, tablet, or laptop? Or, with the addition of the Proactive Assistance feature on the Pixel Watch 5, should it be your smartwatch?&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to Chandra and Waraich, Google has had deep internal discussions about the pros and cons of various wearable form factors. Smart rings, for instance, are something that Google consistently gets asked about but won’t be pursuing in the short term.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“To be clear, we’re not closing the door on [smart rings],” Chandra says. “But our belief right now is that there’s so much headroom on a wrist-worn wearable … I think the Fitbit Air is going to have far bigger expansion opportunities given how simple and easy it is for everyone to use it.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Okay, so Google just introduced the minimalist Fitbit Air and for now is passing on smart rings. Perhaps then the next step is an “Ultra” Pixel Watch as Samsung and Apple have done. Not so. When I ask, Waraich explains the current Pixel Watch is where Google sees its premium offerings. Chandra adds that the company is wary of spreading itself too thin.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Google certainly has a hypothesis of what wearable tech ought to be. It’s placing its bets through product launches and software updates, watching carefully to see how we — the wearable lab rats — react to specific ideas. The experiment continues.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">Another wearable debate: whether it makes sense to add in microphones just because you can. For example, putting mics in something like the Fitbit Air so that it can also double as your AI memory — something akin to <a href="https://www.theverge.com/reviews/627056/bee-review-ai-wearable">Amazon’s Bee</a> device.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“At this point, it’s not a technology issue. It’s a user-sentiment, privacy issue. If you [add] a mic, it’s not just that it’s learning from you. It’s learning from the environment. So I think we’re being cautious about how to push that in the right way,” Chandra says, noting it’d have been easy for Google to stuff microphones into the Fitbit Air but the actual problem is whether doing so would add any customer value. “I don’t know yet if we have, as a tech industry, have figured out the right balancing act there.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having tested several AI wearables, my answer is a resounding <em>hell no</em>. As I’ve written on the site, this type of AI wearable tech <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/961707/smart-glasses-ai-wearables-meta-surveillance-privacy">often makes me feel like a spy</a>. Similarly, I’ll simply point to the defunct <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/27/21402493/amazon-halo-band-health-fitness-body-scan-tone-emotion-activity-sleep">Amazon Halo trackers</a>, which not only tracked your emotions based on the <em>tone</em> of your voice but also created highly cursed, self-esteem-obliterating 3D models of your body to estimate fat percentages. Just because AI wearables <em>can</em> track new things doesn’t mean they <em>should</em>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This problem also plagues smart glasses, as seen with the recent privacy backlash toward Meta’s “pervert glasses.” Some of that is Meta’s penchant for sticking its foot in it. Some of that, Google argues, is perhaps a matter of time and place. Perhaps, Chandra notes, people are more amenable to ambient computing — where your devices are always listening — inside the home instead of outside of it.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even so, Google is committed to experimenting. What if, Waraich posited, the camera in smart glasses simply acted as a sensor <em>without</em> recording? As in, the glasses see what you see and can answer questions about your environment, but nothing gets recorded for posterity. In theory, this might mean the ability to automatically log your food without ever having to take a picture. A blind person might be able to ask an AI questions about their surroundings, and passersby wouldn’t have to worry that a photo of them exists in someone else’s camera roll.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To that, I say: Love the concept, good luck communicating how that’s different to the masses.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">This is part of the existential problem facing my beat. How can any AI wearable be versatile enough to account for every individual’s privacy preferences and health journey? It’s easy enough to differentiate the hardware. Casual users? You get a Fitbit Air or Oura Ring. Tech nerds tired of their phones? Depending on your phone, I’ll point you to a Pixel Watch or Apple Watch. Oh, you’re entering an Ironman? I already know you’re wondering which flavor of Garmin or Coros suits you best.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But the software experience is a whole ’nother beast. Right now you can pick from multiple wearable form factors, but they all pretty much give you the same cluttered app and whap you over the head with data fatigue. That’s hardly a recipe for personalized health. I’ve shared over the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/830937/optimizer-cgms-metabolism-wearables">course</a> <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/970056/optimizer-health-tracking-fitness-wearables-what-i-track-in-a-day">of</a> <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/957703/optimizer-withings-dexa-body-composition-health-fitness">several</a> <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/931148/optimizer-pmos-pcos-personalized-health"><em>Optimizers</em></a> that my current health journey relates to fixing my borked metabolism. That requires one set of advice. A cancer patient would need something wholly different. So would a hypochondriac or a young college athlete. Maybe you like a drill-sergeant-type coach. Or, if you’re like me, that type of tough love would make you want to throw up your hands. It’s already hard enough for <em>people</em> to learn how to be wise and judicious about their health, to accept limits and practice compassion without veering into overindulgence. How the <em>hell</em> can any one LLM achieve that wisdom? How can we expect one cluttered, unified software experience to meet the needs of an infinite number of individual needs?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I asked both Chandra and Waraich this. Both were optimistic that AI will one day get there, but it isn’t there currently. They acknowledged that this is a yearslong journey that will require lots and lots of work. That there are a lot of societal and cultural questions that’ll have to be debated internally and externally. After a decade, my wearable bullshit radar is strong, and since Wear OS 3, Google has genuinely welcomed a good wearable grilling whenever I (or other reporters) have offered frank feedback. I can’t say the same for <em>every</em> gadgetmaker on my beat.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I also can’t tell whether Google’s making all the right wearable bets with the Pixel Watch 5, Fitbit Air, or its AI coach. Maybe it’s a whiff to pass on smart rings. I still think I need to see more proof that an AI hardware ecosystem of diverse accessories is the ultimate move. I’ll give Google credit for being so candid about the multiple layers of privacy, culture, design, and tech logistics that go into the current era of wearable gadgets. That said, whenever I zoom out, I can’t help but feel like I’m caught in the proverbial hamster wheel. Testing each new smartwatch, smart ring, or smart glasses, I keep running toward this vaguely defined, AI-powered wearable future. I just don’t feel any closer to reaching it.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">The Google Pixel Watch 5 has, in many ways, been the hardest Pixel Watch to accurately review. Barely anything has changed in terms of hardware. The sizes are the same, the chips and battery got an itty-bitty boost, and there’s a new pyrite satin case finish. Instead, the big updates are all software-related: This year’s watch gets ambitious new health features that expand on the overhauled Google Health app and its AI coach introduced with the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/954768/google-fitbit-air-review-fitness-tracker-wearable-ai-health-coach">Fitbit Air</a> earlier this year.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The only problem is those health updates aren’t here. The watch’s most interesting new features — blood pressure and insulin resistance trends, nightly sleep breathing quality, and strength training cues from the wrist — won’t start rolling out until next month. And in the case of breathing emergency detection, which calls emergency services if the device detects you’ve stopped breathing, the feature is still pending FDA clearance. (Europe will get it at launch, but this isn’t the sort of feature you can test anyway.)&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That leaves me and the Pixel Watch 5 on my wrist in a bit of a reviewer’s pickle. All those features <em>sound</em> smart to me, but I can’t weigh in on whether they’re worth $399.99 —&nbsp;a $50 price hike over last year’s model — until they’re available. Given that half of those new metrics are meant to be viewed <em>monthly</em>, it’ll be a hot minute before I can write about them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Which leaves the rest of the Pixel Watch 5 software updates: Wear OS 7, offline Gemini, a more accurate Raise to Talk feature, Proactive Assistance, more integrated gesture controls in the UI, AI watchfaces, some <a href="https://arc.net/l/quote/wcuxihrl">improved bedtime automations</a>, and better GPS maps for outdoor activities. Broadly, I get the vibe Google’s going for — subtly helpful AI that enables glanceable, quickly actionable information —&nbsp;and I like it. However, except for GPS, these are refinements. They’re not mind-blowing updates that warrant morphing into the “<a href="https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/shut-up-and-take-my-money">Shut up and take my money!</a>” meme. At launch, these will be exclusive to the Pixel Watch 5, but Google does have a history of software updates trickling down to older models with time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wear OS 7 isn’t a major departure from Wear OS 6. The double pinch and wrist turn gestures are now more directly integrated into the UI. At certain points (e.g., scrolling or selecting), you’ll see an animated chip of the pinching gesture. It’s a handy way of teaching you when a gesture can be used. During “live” activities — say, a workout or timer — another chip will appear on the main watchface. Flipping your wrist will dismiss your current screen or a call. These aren’t unique ideas. The Apple Watch has had them for a while. <em>However</em>, I love that they’re more prominently featured on the Pixel Watch (<a href="https://support.google.com/googlepixelwatch/answer/16788035?hl=en">and not just the Watch 5</a>). You’ll never see me pooh-pooh well-executed gesture controls on smartwatches simply because they’re not 100 percent new.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I was less enamored with Proactive Assistance. As my colleagues Dom Preston, David Imel, and Cameron Faulkner have noted in their Pixel 11 reviews, these Gemini-powered suggestions don’t always work as intended. You may also never notice them! On the watch, it was helpful when a friend texted me via Google Messages about my availability for plans. A chip for my Google Calendar instantly popped up. Except those were orchestrated scenarios for testing. In real life, I mostly plan hangouts over Slack or phone calls, where Gemini isn’t integrated. I get the concept, and I can see this improving with future updates. But for now your mileage will vary.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Offline Gemini was more convenient in testing than I’d anticipated. I had zero intention of running with the Pixel 11 Pro Fold that I’d paired with my Watch 5. I’ve dropped way too many a smartphone to risk wrecking a caseless, $1,900 phone. Nevertheless, Gemini was able to start a workout via voice command, as well as quickly obtain a GPS signal well out of Bluetooth range of the phone, and therefore internet. (I did this exact testing scenario before setting up cellular.) There’s still <em>some </em>latency when you use wrist-based Gemini — offline or otherwise — but not so egregious that it’s unusable. Especially for basic tasks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Speaking of GPS, I called Google <em>bold</em> when it claimed the GPS on the Pixel Watch 5 outperforms that on the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro. It does this by utilizing 3D models of buildings, weather data, dual-frequency GPS, and other sensor signals to “correct” wonky GPS data after an activity. When I poked and prodded Google’s Pixel Watch reps at my demos, they didn’t flinch. There was no hedging, no caveats. Just a “we tested it in Manhattan, a GPS nightmare, go forth, Vee, and run till your little legs give out” kind of confidence. I still have a lot more GPS testing I want to do (different terrains, durations, and outdoor exercises), but I have to say — the GPS <em>is</em> dramatically improved, and it outperformed the Ultra 3 in my testing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To test the GPS, I recorded three separate 20-to-30-minute walks in the West Village in Manhattan. During each of these walks, I walked in zigzags, annoyed cabbies by jaywalking across streets I wasn’t supposed to, and annoyed a friend by walking literal circles around her. As you can see in the screenshots here, the Ultra 3 overcorrected, so it appears like I’m mostly walking in a straight line. The Pixel Watch 5 didn’t catch <em>all</em> of my tests — but it did accurately register some of my zigzags, instances where I doubled back on purpose, and <em>one</em> time where I circled my friend. (I currently don’t have a Garmin Fenix 8 Pro, so I wasn’t able to compare it to that device, though you <em>can</em> check out DC Rainmaker’s <a href="https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2026/08/google-pixel-watch-5-gps-accuracy-vs-garmin-apple.html">more hardcore Pixel Watch 5 GPS tests here</a>.)&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I doubt most Garmin or Ultra 3 fans will be enticed to switch based on improved GPS alone. I mean, the Pixel Watch’s design still <a href="https://www.theverge.com/23874281/google-pixel-watch-cracks-no-repairs-warranty">doesn&#8217;t scream</a> <a href="https://arc.net/l/quote/btbcqfez">rugged durability</a> — something most outdoor enthusiasts like. This is more Google leaning into its strengths to deliver a clever solution to a long-standing problem with Pixel and Fitbit wearables. I wouldn’t say it’s perfect. No GPS tracking is. It’s more that GPS accuracy is no longer a reason to hold back from getting a Pixel Watch if you want one.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Which leaves me to regale you with the most bizarre feature I tested: AI watchfaces.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I get why Google made this feature. It acknowledges that there’s a contingent of smartwatch fans who want as many watchfaces as possible and <em>don’t</em> want to rely on a company’s artistic curation. (Cough, Apple.) Theoretically, prompting an AI to generate a watchface of your specific idea makes sense.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But this is also AI. See: this incredibly dooftastic AI-generated watchface of a <em>manta ray</em>. This is not a manta ray. This is number-shaped blobs with eyes and cartoony dinosaur fins.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I had more success asking for a cute Kirby-inspired watchface with “a playful font in a pink and purple theme.” Is it a tad unsettling that these are, again, Kirby-shaped numbers and Kirby’s face plastered onto them? Yeah, but it works. I had the most success with a cross-stitch-themed watchface featuring “fat and cute forest creatures and a retro font.” Sure, portions of the numbers are an <em>embroidered </em>satin stitch and not cross-stitches, but the spirit is there. My main gripe is how limited the customization is. You can tweak the appearance of the clock numbers, colors, and font, and choose one of three basic layouts, but little else. Is this a feature worth boiling oceans for? No, but it’s whimsical enough to please the people it’s intended for.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The hardware tweaks this year aren’t that noticeable. Swiping through screens is snappy but not radically improved. Like its predecessor, the 45mm Watch 5 lasted roughly 36 to 40 hours on a single charge in testing. A year later, I still like the watch stand charger. Fast charging is good enough that you can stick it on the charger while you shower and make it through the day (or night).&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Right now, I feel comfortable saying the Pixel Watch 5 is a great Android smartwatch. RIP OnePlus, and Samsung has been coasting since the Galaxy Watch 6. So, like last year, this is the Android smartwatch to beat. It’s the one I’d recommend to Android smartwatch newcomers, and the $50 price hike thanks to RAMageddon isn’t as bad as it could’ve been.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re an owner of a recent Pixel Watch, I don’t think this is the year to upgrade, though. And even if you’ve got a Pixel Watch 2 or earlier, I’d still wait until the new health features are out and tested before buying. Alternatively, you could opt for doubling up with a <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/954768/google-fitbit-air-review-fitness-tracker-wearable-ai-health-coach">Fitbit Air</a> instead of a new watch if you’re mainly annoyed about having to charge frequently for sleep tracking.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I don’t <em>love </em>feeling like a review is unfinished, but alas — that’s how it is this year. See you back in October for part two after the rest of the health features drop.&nbsp;</p>

You may also want to familiarize yourself with settings regarding opting in or out of your health data being used for AI training. Integrating other third-party health APIs (e.g., connecting to Strava) means you’re also agreeing to each service’s terms and privacy policy.</p>
